Walking into La Mangonada Nevería in downtown Hope, Arkansas, feels like stepping into a celebration. The walls are painted with sprinkles, neon signs light up the room, and the air is sweet with the smell of fresh fruit, churros, and homemade ice cream. It’s more than a shop — it’s Alejandra Aguirre’s dream brought to life.
From Home Kitchen to Downtown Hope
Alejandra’s journey started years ago, long before La Mangonada opened its doors.
“This all started about 7 years ago when I used to live in Texas. There are a lot of places like this in Texas. When my husband and I decided to return to Hope, we realized there wasn’t an ice cream shop or snack place in the area, so I started selling these snacks from my home. I did that for three years. At some point, I got complaints from neighbors because I had a lot of cars outside of my house. I had too many customers. I told my husband we need to find a big location to start doing this the right way. That’s basically how it started.”
What began in her kitchen quickly grew beyond what she ever imagined, leading her to open La Mangonada Nevería downtown.
A Place Full of Flavor and Joy
La Mangonada is named for its most popular treat, the mangonada, a Mexican favorite made with mango, lime, chamoy, and chili seasoning. But that’s only the beginning. Every week, Alejandra and her team make fresh ice cream and popsicles. Every day, they prepare fruit and special snacks. From vanilla cream–filled churros to Dubai chocolate-covered strawberries, there’s always something delicious waiting.
Heart for Customers and Community
Alejandra credits her success to more than just good food; it’s about the way she treats people.
“I always put myself in my customer’s shoes, how I would want to be treated.”
That care and dedication have been met with overwhelming community support.
“I’m so grateful for the local community because there are a lot of people that I didn’t even know that just came to support the business, and it’s like a blessing to me.”
While many encourage her to expand, Alejandra remains focused on preserving the quality and spirit of La Mangonada.
“I’ve had a lot of people say I should open up different shops, but you know what, I like quality first. If I don’t think I can give the same energy that I do this place to other places, I don’t want to do it.”
